There’s a city on the surface
Built across forgotten ground
Roads and walls and years of living
Over things that made no sound

Some were buried out of mercy
Some were sealed beneath the floor
Now I stand above the foundations
With the keys to every door

I’m excavating the graveyard
Not to wake what should stay dead

Not to trade the life I’m living
For the shadows in my head

I’m excavating the graveyard
Because the ground belongs to me

And whatever waits beneath it
Doesn’t own what I can be

Bring the plans
Mark the structures
Not every wall must fall

Some were built by who I became
Some have nothing to do with this at all

No swinging blindly through the present
No reducing life to pain

We survey
We choose
We uncover

And we build again

Brush, not hammer

Light, not flame

Name what can be named

Leave what cannot
Where it lies

There’s no prize
For digging fastest

I’m excavating the graveyard
With an older pair of hands

And the child who once was buried here
No longer digs alone

This isn’t where the story ends

This is where I finally learn

What was underneath
The home
